Creative freedom, a liberal attitude to genre and an astute awareness of the changing craft of the DJ in the digital age make up the prongs of the Electric Deluxe trident. One that has been jabbing at the fleshy, swollen underbelly of techno now for four years with its twofold radicalism, manifested in its music policy and attitude towards the consumption and experience of its products. For the artists involved—who collectively scale the electronic spectrum—Electric Deluxe has been a platform for new projects and collaborations, like Perc & Giorgio Gigli’s Endless outfit. For others, it has facilitated an escape from established careers and stylistic affinities in order to indulge freely in other sonic niches.

As for its audience, on the Electric Deluxe stage some of today’s esteemed and skilful practitioners including Brendon Moeller, Terence Fixmer, Gary Beck, Chris Liebing, Phil Kieran and Speedy J himself have revealed hidden passions and unknown sides to their production. Meanwhile its innovative tools series, which breaks down EPs into usable parts, is a credit to the label’s sensitivity to the advances in music technology and the effects on its surrounding culture. All in all making Electric Deluxe a truly forward thinking and thoroughly modern stable. To toast its four-year anniversary, Electric Deluxe have asked four label stalwarts to select their favourite tracks and tools from the catalogue, to be released in a sequence of artist compilations.

A highly acclaimed remix of Phil Kieran’s ‘Empty Vessels’ marked Gary Beck’s entry into the Electric Deluxe family, who prior had released through Fine Art Recordings, Soma, Drumcode and his own Bek Audio. He returned to EDLX in May last year with ‘Egosit’. Together with “Speedy J’s Dub Tool”, the EP supported two collaborations between the pair—a remix and a mid-range tool. Elements from both EPs have made it onto Gary Beck’s comp, which also features an early track from Terence Fixmer’s debut EDLX EP, ‘Machine’, Perc & Georgio Gigli as Endless, EDLX’s anonymous collab trio Back Pack Poets and a set of some serious lethal tools.
