EDLX SPOTLIGHT #17 MATERIAL OBJECT
October 24, 2011We hooked up with Material Object….
[EDLX] How did you start producing and when?
I got my first synths as a teenager in the 90′s and messed about with hardware for a while, spending days on end getting lost in x0x boxes, synced into anything that made sound.. i recorded a few of these monster analog jams but never really took it further. It wasn’t until 2007 that i built my own real studio and started looking at it more seriously.
[EDLX] What is your approach to putting the tracks together in the
studio?
I try to focus on ‘sound’ as much as possible. I find that when starting with a good sound, everything else falls naturally into place. The studio process itself is constantly evolving, I’ve gone through phases of ditching hardware for software and then going back again. hopefully this evolution will never stop. learning is the fun part.
[EDLX] Can you describe your sound? Electronic! maybe a little too distorted. definitely dark. hopefully a even a little unique.
[EDLX] Can you reference some of your influences?
I’m a child of ‘rave’. When i discovered ‘techno’ it was such a departure from anything else musically that i’d heard and it layed the foundation for everything else. In terms of artists that have influenced me, thats a long list and mainly populated by the usual suspects with the occasional qawwali chant thrown in.
[EDLX] What do you listen to when you are not producing music? mostly electronica and ambient stuff , some world music with the occasional (real) band album thrown in.
Google ‘phonaut’ for most of it!
[EDLX] What have been your gig highlights of the last 6 months?
I’ve been laying low over the past few years, performance wise but my Gig highlights have definitely been all the Electric Deluxe parties @ Melkweg in Amsterdam. from the first in 2008 to the last one i went to in Nov 2010. The mood in that place is always something special.
[EDLX] What is your electric deluxe top ten from the back catalogue?
Trails
Bootes
Surma (Speedy J rmx)
Shoeglaze (edit select revisit)
Maggie
Magnit
Sculpture
Surma
Red Shit
Echologist Connect
[EDLX] What is your next release?
I’ve just released a full length album that is a collaboration between myself and the German Ambient Stalwart Pete Namlook on his Fax +49-69/450464 record label. Its kinda half ambient, half IDM and almost all live! The release is out both digitally and in surround sound DTS 5.1 discs for the boffins.
[EDLX] Who surprises you the most when you play with them? Who is
pulling out records that you don’t know?
The last time i had my mind blown by a dj was by George Issakidis @ the first Electric Deluxe in Amsterdam. He played totally odd tracks that i would never ever think i’d appreciate let alone enjoy but he just rocked it out and made the crowd move. It was irresitable
[EDLX] At edlx one part of releases is always the tools. Do you make
tools for your own dj sets are you playing lots of edits.
I do a little of both for my own ‘live’ efforts with digital djing. i think the way EDLX has pioneered the releasing of Parts is fantastic and has opened up a new avenue that allows artists to push the capabilities of ‘djing’ when using all digital gear.
[EDLX] Anything else you want to mention or say?
Thanks for inviting me to do a Podcast mix! My mix is a chunky slice of Acid which represents a very fun phase in my musical world and hopefully exposes some people to something they’ve not heard before.
